CHAPTER 21

CASSIAN

New York in the spring had always been the time of year where the city felt most alive to me. The sweltering summer heat was still a couple months off, but the sun was bright and cheerful, and the city thrummed with energy and anticipation of all the good things to come before fall descended upon it again.

Blossom trees bloomed down side lanes, and planter boxes on sidewalks overflowed with colorful petals and vivid leaves. New Yorkers wore trendy clothes that weren’t the usual black and dark shades seen in the winter, and store windows turned heads with brand new fashion pieces and obnoxious sale signs.

Kaya’s head moved back and forth on a swivel as we walked down one of my favorite streets in the city. Restaurants and bars lined both sides of the street, and pop-up outdoor patios took up parallel parking spots that would be freed up again come winter weather. People mingled out on the patios and sipped drinks while upbeat music played, and up ahead, kids chased each other across the grass in a small park on the corner of the block.

We’d been all over the city together this afternoon, but I’d yet to find a place that hit the mark with Kaya. I had the impression she was simply entertaining me and not actually enjoying any of this.

“What do you think?” I gestured around at the street, the blooming trees, the vanilla-scented lattes on tables as we passed an overpriced but delicious café.

Kaya chewed at the inside of her cheek. “It’s nice.”

Nice? That’s it?

Talk about falling on my face.

Frowning, I wondered how I could turn this around. “Is there anywhere you’ve always wanted to go in New York? Central Park? Times Square? The Empire State Building?”

A gentle breeze ruffled her hair and she pulled it away from her face, tucking it behind her ears. “I don’t know. The city isn’t really my thing. It all feels a bit claustrophobic to me if I’m being honest. I prefer open spaces. Greenery. You know, less concrete?”

An idea struck me. “I might know just the place.”

Kaya stood back when I flagged down a yellow cab. I opened the back door for her and we both slid across the seat. The driver, a portly man with a sweaty forehead in a floral-printed polo shirt, twisted around in the front seat and gave us a toothy smile. “Good afternoon, folks. Where to?”

I clipped my seatbelt on. “Twenty-nine hundred Southern Boulevard.”

The driver grinned and turned forward. “You’ve got it.”

Kaya crossed one leg over the other and cracked open her window. “Where is that?”

“You’ll see.”

She gave me a crooked smile. “Why so cryptic?”

“It’s a surprise. What’s wrong with that?”

“I don’t usually like surprises.”

“You didn’t like me when we first met either, and now look at us. We’re practically friends.”

She giggled and rolled her eyes. “Practically?”

“Don’t lie. You were happy to see me at your door.”

Kaya didn’t deny it. Her eyes glittered, and instead of answering, she turned her face to the window and inhaled deeply.
